Events

There’s a high number of students here at Harwell, working in a wide variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) areas, which means our student community is diverse, interesting and unique.

Come along to any of the events listed below to meet others in the community.

There are several buses serving the Harwell site. Thames Travel operates services to Oxford, Abingdon and Didcot and surrounding towns, while Stagecoach operates services to Oxford and Abingdon. Timetables can be found on their respective websites, however for journey planning and timetables Traveline South East is also very useful.

It is useful to note that the last bus is quite early in the evening.

There is a direct bus service between Oxford-Harwell Campus operated by Thames Travel that takes approximately 40 minutes. It departs at 8.00 from St Aldates - Oxford and at 17.20 from the Harwell Campus. Students rates at Thames Travel are available for 10 trip passes only.

Harwell Campus is well-connected by road to local towns and major roads. The A34 takes you to Oxford and the M40 to the north and towards the M4 to the south. A local map of the area can be found below, or a link to Google and Bing.

Opportunities

Public engagement incorporates communication and outreach activities that aim to engage the public with the really cool stuff that we do in STEM. It comes in various forms (public talks, visiting schools, volunteering at science fairs, giving tours…….) and is a highly rewarding and enjoyable thing to do with your time. In addition, strong communication is a highly valuable skill set for life after your degree.

Whether you’re new to public engagement or already a pro, there’s lots of support onsite to help you carry on the good work.

Check out the STFC outreach pages for examples of what you can do and contact Sophy Palmer if you’d like to get involved in any way.

Check out the STEMNET website to find out more about becoming a STEM ambassador and volunteering in your local area.
