The Mission of the Centre for Instrumentation, originally formed in 2001, is to:
“Undertake strategic research to provide for the future instrumentation needs of STFC facilities and programmes.”
In pursuit of this the Centre for Instrumentation (CfI) develops strategic technology roadmaps. These shape the long term managed research and development programmes in STFC. The CfI is also responsive to short term research and development proposals. These enable radical and disruptive technologies to be created. The decision process involves working with key stakeholders. To address this the Centre funds Managed Programmes and Responsive Mode projects respectively.
Recent changes within the Centre are now enabling extra focus of research in the technology roadmaps. These include the Innovate UK Challenge goals. The new direction will ensure that the Centre remains relevant not only to STFC stakeholders but also to industrial interests and public bodies.
STFC funding allocations to this programme are reviewed and made annually. In October each year the Departmental units of STFC are approached as well as others that have previously indicated an interest in the CfI to solicit bids for this resource for the coming financial year. Bids are received formerly in early January and then reviewed by three independent people. Once that has taken place a prioritisation is made by the Director of TD and this is then presented to the CfI Board at a meeting in March. The CfI Board then approves the allocations for the coming year.
