Goniometer

Diamond Light Source has chosen the UK Astronomy Technology Centre to design and construct a vacuum operating six axis goniometer with sample cooling for its Long-Wavelength Macromolecular Crystallography Beamline I23.

This Beamline will be a unique facility for solving the crystallographic phase problem using the small anomalous signals from sulphur or phosphorous present in native protein or RNA/DNA "crystals". The crystals have to be positioned and rotated within a sphere of confusion of less than 3 microns diameter at cryogenic temperatures in vacuum during the experiments.

This combination of cooling, vacuum and precision is provided by the Goniometer and will be unique worldwide.
