STFC Technology provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects.

Our technologies and competencies are world class, and our expertise encompasses micro-nano engineering, through microelectronics, to major engineering structures. The calibre and expertise of our staff, and our project and quality management expertise, enables us to deliver unique and advanced high performance engineering projects.

Key facts

Technology has a presence at each of STFC's national laboratories. At the UK ATC in Edinburgh we focus on work in support of the astronomy programme. At Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Daresbury Laboratory we support the particle physics and space programmes, accelerator development, and STFC's major facilities:

  • ISIS
  • Diamond
  • Central Laser Facility

We complement our STFC funding with external work for other Research Councils, government programmes, the EU, the private sector, and other research institutes, universities and facilities across the world.

We leverage commonality across STFC facilities and programmes to improve cost effectiveness and quality, encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange and provide researchers with access to a much broader and deeper pool of technical expertise than would be possible individually, thereby enabling them, and you, collectively to tackle challenges that would otherwise be beyond reach.

Technology at Daresbury Laboratory (T@DL) provides technology, engineering and support to STFC’s facilities and programmes. The Division is organised into six groups, four in the Engineering Technology Centre, the Detector Systems Group and the Nuclear Physics Group.
UK Astronomy Technology Centre (credit: STFC)
The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) is the national centre for astronomical technology. We design and build instruments for many of the world's major telescopes. We also project-manage UK and international collaborations.
The Applied Science Division (ASD) contains a range of key skills and technologies of long term value to STFC. These include magnet and materials technology, cryogenics, energy technologies, high power target engineering and advanced engineering design and analysis.
The Detector and Electronics Division develops, constructs and installs instrumentation solutions for STFC’s facility programme. The team is unique in the UK in that it contains the complete skill set from beamline integration and high data rate data acquisition to sensor material development, CMOS imaging and ASIC design.
Through its various actions, the Microelectronics Support Centre (MSC) provides STFC and its grant holders with affordable access to the broad range of advanced design methodologies, tools and expertise required to design these systems in a timely and cost-effective manner.
