Microelectronics Support Centre (MSC)

Advanced electronics and microelectronics are key enabling technologies for many of the facilities and research projects funded by STFC. Through its various actions, the Microelectronics Support Centre (MSC) provides STFC and its grant holders with affordable access to the broad range of advanced design methodologies, tools and expertise required to design these systems in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The MSC provides access to and supports of leading electronic system and microelectronics design tools at the best possible conditions for STFC and STFC grant holders. To enable this to happen, and facilitate collaborative projects, the MSC operates on a European scale and these services are also made available to 640 UK and European universities and non-commercial research institutes on a pay as you use basis under the Europractice project brand.

The design flows address by the MSC cover a broad spectrum from semiconductor and device modelling, though full custom and semi custom IC design to reconfigurable platforms, System-on-Chip and embedded systems, all supported by design tools from leading EDA vendors.

In addition, the Microelectronics Support Centre provides training via short courses from its dedicated facility at RAL and, via project partners, at selected host locations across Europe. These courses are based on the train-the-trainer philosophy for maximum impact and courses are developed on carefully selected topics that are important to the strategic needs of the academic sector.

The Microelectronic Support Centre stimulates and enables the UK and European academic sector to use the latest design tools and design methodologies in their research projects and teaching which in turn enables the universities to more easily produce the next generation of high-calibre microelectronics design engineers that are required by UK and European industry.
