The LOw Frequency ARray, LOFAR, is a radio telescope comprising thousands of antennas grouped in 'stations' spread all over Europe. Based around a headquarters and core sites in the Netherlands, LOFAR stations are operating or being planned in Germany, France, Sweden, Poland and the UK. Working in the poorly-explored 30-240 MHz frequency range, with an unprecedented field of view and multiple beams, LOFAR is revolutionising low-frequency radio astrophysics.
The first LOFAR station in the UK was opened in September 2010 at STFC’s Chilbolton Observatory in Hampshire. The station operates both as a stand-alone facility and as part of the wider European LOFAR network in a wide range of science areas, including deep radio surveys, studies of the Epoch of Re-ionisation, time-domain astrophysics such as pulsars and radio transients, cosmic magnetic fields, solar physics and the effect of the sun on the Earth. Funding for the construction of the Chilbolton station was provided through the LOFAR-UK consortium, representing 22 UK Universities. STFC provides ongoing operating costs.
