The concept of a Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator, first developed in the 1950s, has undergone a re-birth following major technological advances in the 1990s.
Its potential and promise have prompted theoretical study and experimental R&D at several institutes around the world. At ASTeC, the Intense Beams group, concentrates mainly on beam optics and the dynamics of both scaling and non-scaling FFAGs for muon and proton acceleration.
The primary goals are to optimize the accelerator parameters for fast acceleration of very large emittance, unstable beams (such as muons) and, in the case of protons or ions, for stable acceleration with low particle loss. Beam transport lines using the FFAG principle are also under investigation.
