Here is a sample video from the family day to show some of the fun that was had by all.
We will be publishing more images and information as soon as we can.
Thank you again to all who visited us, participated and made this such a good day.
With over 70 activities and counting, there was something for everyone at the Daresbury Laboratory Open Day. Here are just a handful of the ways in which you would have seen science up close:
Meet REX, the closest you will ever get to meeting a real live dinosaur – so realistic you’ll have to remind yourself he’s not the real deal! Have a go at walking an awesome life-size digital dinosaur controlling his movements with an X-box and get up close to some super-cool real dinosaur bones.
See yourself frozen in time from a 360-degree angle in a super cool film sequence, where you can strike a pose to create your own action scene, straight from a movie.
Immersive Virtual Environment

Visit the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre, based at Daresbury Laboratory, to experience the very latest in virtual reality technology in the Wheel Change Challenge.
Change the virtual wheel against the clock in an immersive virtual experience, complete with tracked headset, gloves and integrated physical cues. You never know, you may find yourself on the Wheel Change Challenge leader board- but you’ll have to be quick!
Go behind the scenes of world-leading UK science and get a rare, up-close look at ALICE, one of the most advanced particle accelerators working on cancer therapy research.
You can now experience the magic of CERN’s LHC without having to leave the country, by visiting our amazing touring exhibition. Learn about how the LHC works and walk through a life-size replica of the world-famous tunnel.
How good is your aim? Try your hand at shooting lasers to pop the balloons in the balloon popping challenge!
Come and check out SuperSTEM, the impressive microscope that formed part of the Nobel Prize-winning graphene research.
A whole host of our expert scientists and engineers will be around on the day to answer any of your science or engineering questions – whether you want to know about the formation of the Universe, how to become an engineer or how we design our science facilities.
Take a look inside our Campus Technology Hub and watch our cutting-edge 3D printers in action.
The National Schools’ Observatory Dark Matter Garden at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory Alternate view
Dark Matter fascinates people all over the world, since without it, the stars and galaxies around us, and even the Earth we stand on, would never have formed. We are lucky enough to be home to an inspiring and educational garden all about just that; our Dark Matter Garden, winner of RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s Best Fresh Garden 2015.
Car fans were in for a treat. Not only could you try your hand at the Virtual Engineering Centre’s Wheel Change Challenge, but we had a wonderful classic car show on site, too.
Daresbury Open Week
Our family day was part of a week of activities for schools, businesses and the public to explore the work of the laboratory and STFC.
A dedicated event for schools took place on 6 and 7 July. To find out more about this, please visit our Daresbury Open Week Schools page.
Daresbury Laboratory powers productivity through science and is a world-leading hub for innovation. At our Corporate Open Day on 5 July, we invited businesses to find out about the breadth of our science and research, consider how emerging technologies can impact your business and learn about opportunities to locate your business on the Sci-Tech Daresbury Campus.
Nestled in lovely Cheshire countryside, STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory is a hub for scientific research, packed full of awesome science experiments that investigate fundamental physics, bio-medicine, chemistry, materials, engineering, computational science and loads more. Scientists on site collaborate with researchers all over the world, including at CERN in Switzerland—the home of the Large Hadron Collider, and are changing the world with their discoveries each day.
Daresbury Laboratory is also a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity, with many high-tech businesses spinning out of the advanced technology developed onsite.
The Laboratory has an incredibly rich history and has been flying the flag for UK science for over 50 years.
