Who can enter the School Science Prize?
If you are a Year 9 student, you are eligible to enter the School Science Prize.
What do I have to do to enter?
Year 9 students are asked to write a 500 word essay about “Why I love science”. We will be looking for an excitement about science and an enthusiasm to learn more.
When do I need to write my essay by?
The closing date for the School Science Prize will be Monday 21 November, and students will be informed if they are finalists on Tuesday 29 December.
What does the winner receive?
All participating students will receive a certificate, and the top 15 students will be invited to RAL for an evening celebration on Tuesday 13 December 16:30 – 20:00. The overall winner will receive an iPad mini.
What happens at the evening celebration?
The 15 finalists will receive a book token and we have special permission for the finalists to have tours inside one of our high powered lasers - either Vulcan, Astra Gemini or Artemis. They will have to wear clean suits and will be able to visit parts of the facility rarely seen by students. Family and teachers of the finalists will be invited to the evening celebration, although due to the difficulty of large numbers of people in the laser facilities themselves they will not be able to join the tour. Instead, there will be a talk given by one of our laser physicists about the work of the Central Laser Facility.
Each finalist will then be asked to give a two minute presentation on why they love science. This can be done however they wish – a PowerPoint presentation or using props etc. While the judges deliberate there will be another short talk given by one of our scientists about why they love science, and then there’ll be an evening reception, with some hands-on activities to try. Finally, the presentations will be made and the overall winner will receive and iPad mini.
