Arrangements for payments to students who hold studentships under doctoral training grants will be agreed between the student and the Research Organisation.
Payments made to the Research Organisation on behalf of all students on Training Grants cover the following:
The annual rates for the 2013/2014 academic year will be applied from 1 October 2013.
The level of the allowance is contingent on whether the Research Organisation attended is located outside or in London (Research Organisations in London are those located within the City of London and Metropolitan Police districts).
2013/2014 rates are:
Holders of STFC Industrial CASE and Industrial CASE-Plus awards receive £615 pa in addition to the basic maintenance allowance. Payments will be based on the annual rate and will be paid quarterly in advance.
Disabled students who because of disability incur additional expenditure in connection with undertaking a PhD training programme, may be eligible for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). Disabled students who have been recruited to fill STFC funded PhDs should contact the disability adviser or named contact on disability matters at their Research Organisation for guidance and advice. Additional support may include funds for specialist equipment, non-medical assistance and general disabled students' allowances.
Full guidance and claim forms can be found on the DSA web page.
Research Councils do not have set rates for DSA. However, Research Organisations' Disability Support Advisers and others may find it useful to refer to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) guidance on DSA as an indicator of the likely levels of funds a disabled student may require. The level of funds awarded will reflect the support the student needs to undertake a PhD training programme.
