How to apply for Research Grants

Preparing a proposal

Applicants should check the scheme guidance notes for full details of what must be included within their proposal and the case for support.

The completed proposal, together with the case for support, should be submitted by the relevant closing date through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system. Please take account of the closing date for the scheme for which you are applying. Proposals must be submitted by 4.00pm on the closing date.

Applicants for STFC grants are reminded of the importance of providing, within the case for support, full justification for all resources requested (other than indirect and estates costs).

The Research Grants Handbook is a comprehensive guide to eligibility, application and assessment procedures, post award administration and the terms and conditions that apply to all STFC research grants.

Submitting an STFC proposal

Research Organisations and applicants for STFC research grants must comply with the eligibility requirements set out in the STFC Research Grants Handbook.

The Joint Electronic Submission (link opens in a new window) (Je-S) system

  • All proposals for STFC research grants must be made through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system

  • Most Research Organisations eligible for STFC funding are now registered for Je-S

  • Individual applicants wishing to access the Je-S system for the first time are asked to check with their central administration on the status of their organisation's Je-S registration before pursuing the option of creating an account on the system

  • The Je-S Helpdesk can assist with queries regarding the issue of user IDs and passwords, or navigation of the system. If you need any help, advice, or are having technical difficulties, please contact the Helpdesk. The Je-S Helpdesk can be contacted by telephone on (01793) 444164 or by emailing Je-SHelp@rcuk.ac.uk

  • The Helpdesk is manned Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm (except for Bank Holidays). Voice mail operates outside of these hours

  • Information about the system, including tutorials on the system's functionality can be found on the Je-S web pages (link opens in a new window)

  • For help in preparing and submitting a proposal, go to the Je-S login page and select Je-S System help (link opens in a new window)

  • When you are ready to prepare and submit your proposal go to Je-S system log-in (link opens in a new window)

Research Council facilities

Changes are being made in JeS which will see the Research Council Facilities section of the proposal form become mandatory for all applicants. If no facilities are relevant to the proposal there will be a requirement to tick a box to indicate this. If it is likely that you will be wishing to access a facility to carry out your research please ensure that you complete the section selecting all relevant options and providing the proposed usage (note that costs and units are not required for facilities provided by STFC e.g. CLF, Diamond, ISIS, ESRF, ILL). A Technical Assessment attachment will become mandatory when selecting a facility which requires one; currently, this only applies to the HECToR HEC facility.

Providing an indication of facility usage requirements at this pre award stage will enable STFC and other Research Councils with facilities to have a better understanding of the likely level of access in the future, helping to develop the Research Council’s strategy for the facilities.

This new requirement will commence for proposals created in JeS from 27 August 2013. There will be no change to proposals already started before this date, but proposals commenced prior to the 27 August 2013 must be submitted by 31 December 2013; after this date it will not be possible to submit any proposal commenced before 27 August 2013.

Further advice in completing the section can be found within the JeS help text.
