STFC e-Science became part of the Scientific Computing Department of the STFC in April 2012.

The STFC is one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations, supporting scientists and engineers world-wide. It operates world-class, large-scale research facilities, provides strategic advice to the government on their development, and manages international research projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research community.

The Council has responsibility to ensure that the UK scientific community has access to the large facilities that will enable it to perform high quality, world leading research in the future. The STFC is a non-departmental public body responsible to the monarch of the UK through the Privy Council and Parliament.

STFC e-Science is internally organised into a directorate and two divisions, each of which contains several groups.

The organisational structure does not reflect the physical location of staff since both divisions and groups are spread across the sites of both the Daresbury Laboratory and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
