to improve the interactions between institutional repositories
Monday 01 December 2008
JISC has published a report containing a set of practical recommendations for steps that can be taken to improve the interactions between institutional and subject repositories in the UK. The report was written by Catherine Jones, Robert Darby, Linda Gilbert and Simon Lambert of STFC e-Science.
Although the majority of institutional repositories are at an early stage of development and the desired ‘critical mass’ of content is far from having been achieved there is still very little interaction between repositories. The report notes that there is no coherent approach to content preservation among repositories, and in many cases long-term preservation policy appears underdeveloped.
The recommendations include a call for a UK repository community forum to be established where representatives of subject/funder and institutional repository communities can work to agree and implement standards and protocols for co-ordinated information management to overcome the wide variation between repositories in metadata formats and quality, and to move towards the critical mass of content.
