CoreGRID is a European "Network of Excellence" (NoE) funded by the European Commission's 6th Framework Program. The network aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies. When projects come to an end, the collaboration usually disbands and the researchers address new topics. In contrast, when the funding for the Coregrid network ends this month the collaboration will continue as an ERCIM working group.
The Network has operated as a European Research Laboratory (known as the CoreGRID Research Laboratory) consisting of six institutes mapped to the areas that have been identified in the joint programme of activity. The Network has been committed to setting up this Laboratory and to make it internationally recognised and sustainable. It is funded by a European grant (8.2 M euros) for four years from September 1st, 2004, to cover the integration costs while the network partners cover the expense required to perform the research associated with the joint programme of activities.
Coregrid has brought together a critical mass of well-established researchers (155 permanent researchers and 168 PhD students) from 41 institutions who have undertaken an ambitious joint programme of activities. But when the European funding ends this month that collaboration will not end.
ERCIM Directors have created a working group to continue the collaborative activities and the name of CoreGRID, The main purpose of the CoreGRID Working Group will be to ensure sustainability of the Network of Excellence (NoE) by maintaining and extending the active collaboration within the European GRID and SOA research community.
STFC e-Science have been members of the CoreGRID NoE and will continue to be active in the ERCIM working group. The NoE has enabled visitors to come to work with the e-Science team at RAL researching grid security, and for STFC staff to visit other institutions. These collaborations have produced innovative research results, which the ERCIM working group will foster.
