VizNET, of which STFC is founder, held a hands-on school to introduce computational steering to scientists as a practical tool.
Computational steering enables a scientist to control the evolution of the computation of his simulation, using real time analysis and visualisation of the status of the simulation, as opposed to the post process analysis and visualisation of the output of such a computation. In a nutshell, the functionality of computational steering enables the user to influence the otherwise sequential simulation and analysis phases by merging and interleaving them. Online visualization and computational steering of scientific applications has been widely recognized as the key to better insight and understanding of the observed simulation.
