JISC launches UK e-infrastructure programme

Dr Neil Geddes, Science and Technology Facilities Council Director e-Science, presented the context setting kickoff presentation yesterday at the startup workshop for the JISC e-infrastructure programme.

The £10M programme aims to develop a coherent UK e-Research infrastructure which will provide sustainable central services supporting the processes of research to facilitate high quality research. The vision for the programme follows the initial five year investment in the UK e-Science infrastructure, which is being developed with other partners to expand the uptake and effective use of the e-infrastructure from early adopters and researchers across disciplines. The UK research community is expected to benefit through a broader use of e-infrastructure; increased capability, expertise and effective use of e-Infrastructure; enhanced and easier to use security for the UK grid infrastructure; production level software and capabilities, and through new ways of retrieving, processing and archiving data.
