Ian Taylor is chairman of Living PlanIT SA which has developed a software platform to integrate and operate innovative technologies within environmentally sustainable urban developments. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Campaign for Science & Engineering and is an adviser to ESA's Integrated Applications Programme. He chairs the advisory board of the Rainbow Seed Fund which invests on behalf of leading UK publicly funded research organisations to kick-start ventures emerging from the research base. He also chairs the National Space Academy steering group.
Ian was a Member of Parliament for 23 years until deciding to stand down at the 2010 General Election. He was Minister for Science and Technology at the Department of Trade and Industry during 1994 - 1997. He was an officer of several all Party committees, including chairing the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and the Parliamentary Space Committee. In 2008, he gained the Sir Arthur C. Clarke Award for Individual Achievement in Promoting Space and Science.
