Metrology

'Using the Romer arm to make on-site measurements

Our metrology facility meets the ever increasing demand for high precision measurement imposed by scientific projects. With state-of-the-art equipment, we offer the following complete service:

  • Measurement with high accuracy Co-ordinate Measuring Machines (camera and probe)
  • Instrument calibration certified and traceable to national standards
  • Surface texture analysis
  • Determination of roundness and form
  • Hardness evaluation
  • Optical alignment and surveying using the latest laser tracking systems
  • Metrology training also available: National Physical Laboratory (NPL) accredited

We import CAD models whenever possible so that the measurements of the machined item can be directly compared with the design dimensions and tolerances. Our long experience and large range of traditional and modern equipment allows us to measure large, awkward or novel items with proven success, such as the on-site tolerance checking of the AGATA backing structure, or the fine measurement of the large flexible composite cylinder for the ATLAS project. Technology staff are also able to offer expert technical assistance with geometric and dimensional inspection, metrology and calibration.

Highlights of our equipment and it's capabilities are as follows:

Inspection

  • Large upgraded LK CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)
  • DEA Gamma CMM - Measuring envelope of 1000mm x 500mm x 500mm (measuring to an accuracy of +/- 0.003mm with Aberlink software)

Surveying

  • Faro Laser Tracker with Spatial Analyser software (Measuring range of 30m to an accuracy of 10 ?/m)
  • Romer Measuring Arm (Measuring range of 2.6m to an accuracy of +/- 34?m) shown in use on the AGATA project
