The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) team at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has sent a circular letter to the RAE contacts at the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) about returning information concerning research income
As announced by the RAE team (RAE Circular letter 2006/01 (link opens in a new window)), HEIs may report in their RAE 2008 submissions the estimated value of Research Council facility time allocated through peer review.
STFC has now written to HEIs to inform them of the value of their income in-kind to be awarded to academic members of staff for use of Research Council facilities. This includes information provided by EPSRC, and NERC, as well as STFC. This data covers facility usage during the period 1st January 2001 to 31st March 2007.
STFC is providing the estimated value of facility time, on Principal/Lead Investigator basis, for the following facilities:
- Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT)
- Central Laser Facility (CLF)
- CERN
- Diamond Light Source (DLS)
- European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT)
- European Southern Observatory (ESO)
- European Space Agency (ESA)
- European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF)
- Gemini
- Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL)
- Isaac Newton Telescope (INT)
- ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS)
- Jacobus Kepteyn Telescope (JKT)
- James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)
- Liverpool Telescope (LT)
- MERLIN
- Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS which closed in 2008)
- Support for Particle Physics at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories (PPRAL)
- United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT)
- UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)
- William Herschel Telescope (WHT)
- World Data Centre (WDC)
The actual value of Facility Development Project Grants awarded by the STFC to HEIs will also be provided.
The data has been sent directly to the nominated HEFCE RAE contacts within central departments of HEIs. Facility users are advised to contact their support departments to find out the value of their facility usage.
