It's a small, small world

What do a diamond, a graphite pencil, a lump of coal and a football have in common? From this starting point the lesson establishes that the properties of a material depend on its structure and from there looks at carbon 60 and other nanoparticles.

There are activities to make a carbon 60 structure from card and an experiment about the effectiveness of sunscreens which contain nanoparticles. The video on nanotechnology explains the two approaches to making nanostructures (top down and bottom up) and looks at a top-down process to make a device for diagnosing prostate cancer.
