Session 1 - Setting the scene

This session is to set the context of the workshop by providing a broader perspective on why QA4EO is essential and the current status of activities.

Sessions 2-7 - Case Studies from Societal Benefit Areas

Examples to demonstrate how quality information is used by Societal Benefit Areas (SBA). These initial topic sessions should be to provide examples to stimulate discussion - to show impacts, issues, and advantages. Identify the end-to-end chain of events - from data provider (L1 calibration) - making data available - flow through to higher level products - how information comes out as a result.

These sessions are intended to inform the wider Earth observation community with the focus on quality assurance issues, and not simply to be a workshop on biodiversity etc... The intention being to cover only a few topics in sufficient depth to make informed decisions.

Three themes have been chosen for the plenary sessions:

Forest Carbon Tracking
Atmosphere and Climate Change
Biodiversity

For each topic the presenters should aim to address the following questions in their presentations:

What are the scientific (or decision / policy) goals?
What are the sources of data? (satellite, airborne, in situ, other)
What other information and models are being used?
What are the definitions and quality requirements for the key measurements and data outputs?
What is the impact of not achieving the quality requirements/goals for the parameters? (as above)
Are quality indicators assigned at every step of the chain or only the end product?
What are your recommendations for the way forward when thinking about quality of data within your study?

Poster Sessions

These are key to ensuring that the workshop is not limited to the three SBAs but can be extended to include the wider community. The poster sessions should aim to cover the similar questions raised at the plenary sessions. These present an opportunity for flexible and interactive discussion in a less formal manner. As with the plenary sessions, the issues raised in the poster sessions will be captured to bring forwards to the way forwards sessions.

Session 8-10 - Way Forward

The purpose of these sessions is to draw together the main themes raised during the plenary and poster sessions and to inform the implementation roadmap.

Session 11 - Conclusions

Review recommendations from the previous sessions and agree the way forward.
