The MSF is home to two of the highest resolution Fourier transform spectrometers in the UK. A Bruker IFS 125HR and a refurbished Bruker IFS 120HR have a six metre maximum optical path difference, giving 0.0015 cm-1 resolution.

Besides FT instruments, the MSF is investing in the rapidly developing technology of quantum cascade lasers. These spectrometers may be coupled with a variety of sample containment cells with optical path lengths ranging from a few microns to one kilometre, operating at temperatures between 77 and 473 K and pressures up to five atmospheres.
