Support for schools and colleges

As part of our Science in Society work we support the development of science education in the UK. We have a Schools Liaison Officer,and have published resource guides for teachers in our science areas. Some of these resources were made with funding from our awards schemes.

Schools Liaison Officer

Our Schools Liaison Officer| can advise on ways to link school science to some of the most exciting research being carried out by UK scientists around the world. He can provide support on arranging visits to scientific establishments and on finding suitable speakers on Astronomy and Space Science (link opens in a new window)| or Particle Physics (link opens in a new window)|.

Other Publications

We have produced a range of other free publications (link opens in a new window) in the areas of Astronomy and Space Science and Particle Physics for use in schools and colleges, including teaching packs (written by experts with advice from science teachers).

Funding and Grants

Our Small and Large Awards schemes| provide grants for educational and other projects which support the aims of our programme.

Lunar Samples

You can borrow one of our lunar samples packs containing moonrocks and moondust (brought back from the moon by Apollo astronauts) and meteorites available on free loan. These are fully supported by teaching materials.

Researchers in Residence

Researchers in Residence (link opens in a new window) | is a scheme which can bring young physicists into your school and supports a range of other educational activities. It is funded by Research Councils UK (link opens in a new window)| and the Wellcome Trust (link opens in a new window)|, and run by the University of Edinburgh.

BA Crest Awards

BA CREST is a nationally recognized accreditation scheme for project work in the fields of science and technology. Aimed at students aged 11-19, BA CREST awards encourage students to develop their scientific curiosity, problem-solving and communication skills. It is supported by Research Councils UK (link opens in a new window)| and Astrazeneca (link opens in a new window)|.
