The STFC organises a wide range of scientific lectures and events, ranging from the highly specialised and technical, to hands-on learning for schools.


General information

Most events listed here are open to everyone, but admission is by prior registration with the event organiser. See the individual listings for a guide on suitability for different age groups.


Visit the sites

Visits offer an exciting opportunity to discover some of the amazing science, engineering and technology currently taking place at the STFC. It is a chance to see the world-leading facilities and talk to scientists and engineers.


Lectures

Please note that for the comfort and enjoyment of the audience, suggested age guidelines are shown for each lecture. Children under 16 must be accompanied by, and sit with, a responsible adult. Food and drinks are not allowed in the Lecture Theatres.

50 Years of the Laser and its implications in medicine
(Recorded on Friday 15 October 2010 at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory)
This talk is in two parts:
  • Part 1: Dr Taj Bhutta from the IOP explains what a laser is, and how they are made
  • Part 2: Mahmood Bhutta, an ENT surgeon from Oxford, will discuss the impact that lasers have had on surgery and medical research.
