CMS Physics
Members of the PPD CMS group have interests in several areas of physics
High-energy electrons and photons
- A PPD physicist (Claire Shepherd-Themistocleous) is co-convener of the CMS HEEP (link opens in a new window) (high energy electrons and photons) working group, and several members of the PPD group, in particular Sam Harper and Rosie Walton, are major contributors to the work of the HEEP group.
- An important topic in the early days of LHC running will be the search for heavy resonances (generically called Z' and W') whose existence is predicted by a variety of theoretical models. RAL physicists are involved in preparations for these searches in channels where high-energy electrons and photons are produced.
b Physics
- A PPD physicist (Ian Tomalin) was until recently the co-convenor of the b-tagging working group. Ian and other members of the PPD CMS group are still very active in b physics.
SUSY Higgs physics
- The behaviour of the Higgs sector in supersymmetric theories is extremely complex. A PPD physicist (Claire Shepherd-Themistocleous) has a strong interest in the phenomenology of the SUSY Higgs sector and in preparations for SUSY Higgs studies when the LHC luminosity becomes high enough.
