Particle Physics strives to understand the structure of matter at the deepest possible level (link opens in a new window). Probing the very shortest (sub-nuclear) distance scales requires the very highest energies.

Particle Physics experiments often make use of high energy particle accelerators in this country and abroad. With its combination of world-leading expertise in developing detectors and accelerators and operating large-scale scientific facilities, the STFC (link opens in a new window), through its national laboratories at RAL and Daresbury Laboratory, is well placed to strengthen and extend the research capabilities of the UK particle physics community.
