How to apply

Full Economic Costing

Following the Government's announcement of reforms to the Dual Support system, the Research Councils introduced new arrangements for research grants in September 2005. Under these arrangements, grant applications must now be submitted under full economic costing (fEC) principles.

The Research Councils' dual support webpage (link opens in a new window) contains a summary of  fEC. A set of FAQs and the full terms and conditions (PDF - link opens in a new window) that apply to fEC grants can also be found on the RCUK website.

Preparing a proposal

STFC provides support for research, research infrastructure, training, knowledge exchange, facility development and public engagement activities through a variety of funding opportunities. Applicants should check the scheme guidance notes for full details of what must be included within their proposal and the case for support.

The completed proposal, together with the case for support, should be submitted by the relevant closing date through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system. Applicants for STFC grants are reminded of the importance of providing, within the case for support, full justification for all resources requested (other than indirect and estates costs).

The Research Grants Handbook is a comprehensive guide to eligibility, application and assessment procedures, post award administration and the terms and conditions that apply to all STFC research grants. There are two versions of the handbook:
