Environment

The Science and Technology Facilities Council contributes to world-class multi-disciplinary environmental science programmes, ranging from the molecular studies of greenhouse gases to earth observation.

Our unique mix of scientific expertise will play a vital part in tackling many environmental challenges.  Our expertise includes:

• Earth observation - Space Science and Technology (link opens in a new window)
• large scale experimental facilities - CLF (link opens in a new window), Diamond (link opens in a new window), ESRF (link opens in a new window), ILL (link opens in a new window), ISIS (link opens in a new window) and SRS (link opens in a new window) (which closed in 2008)
• data management and analysis
• high performance computing and modelling capabilities.

We also provide a hub for a diverse range of external research communities. 

These activities are funded by our own resources with significant support from the Natural Environment Research Council (link opens in a new window) and other funding agencies.
