Applications For High Performance Computing (HPC)
Details of STFC support for High Performance Computing
National facilities
EPSRC act as managing agent on behalf of STFC and the other UK Research Councils for the national academic supercomputing services, currently the HPCx (link opens in a new window) service located at Daresbury Laboratory. The planned service start date for an additional, new service ( HECToR (link opens in a new window)) is October 2007. Applications may be made to the STFC for time on HPCx and HECToR.
Applications for HPCx time should include a completed Application for National Supercomputing Resources (link opens in a new window) form. Please note that this forms should be submitted to the facility manager (contact details on the form) for technical assessment prior to submission of the Je-S RP1 (STFC) (link opens in a new window) form as the service will use that form to detail additional costs that may be required on the grant, eg, if the software required by the applicant is not supported or requires a licence that incurs additional cost.
Information on the cost of using the national facililties is available here for both HPCx and HECToR (link opens in a new window)
Applications for major investments (exceeding £250k) in HPC provision to support theoretical research (access to national or other (consortium/institutional) HPC facilities or for computer hardware, system and software support, and operating costs) are considered by the Projects Peer Review Panel (link opens in a new window), following a call for proposals approximately every three years. The first calls for proposals has been issued.
Applications for access to national or other (consortium/institutional) HPC facilities or for computer hardware, system and software support, and operating costs below £250k should be submitted on the standard Je-SRP1 (STFC) (link opens in a new window) as part of the normal astronomy or particle physics grant rounds for consideration by either the Astronomy Grants Panel (AGP) or the Particle Physics Grants Panel (Theory) (PPGP).
UK Astrophysical Fluids Facility - UKAFF
Applications for time on the UK Astrophysical Fluids Facility (link opens in a new window) should be made directly to the facility.
