CREST: Collaborative research in exploration systems and technology

Applications are now sought for funding in the area of Collaborative Research in Exploration Systems and Technology (CREST). CREST, which will run in parallel with ESA's Aurora programme, is open to HEIs, other research organisations and industry. Its main objective will be to help PPARC position the UK to secure the maximum scientific and technological returns from future planetary exploration projects and programmes.

Announcement of opportunity

This is now closed and the following is for information only.

The main objective of this Programme Technology Development (PTD) activity is to help PPARC position the UK community to secure the maximum scientific and technological returns from future planetary exploration projects and programmes. This scheme was open to HEIs, other research organisations and industry; collaborative proposals were particularly welcome. Depending upon the size and quality of proposals it is anticipated that between 5 and 10 awards will be made.

The CREST programme will run in parallel to the Preparatory European Space Exploration Programme (PESEP) Aurora and will have the primary purpose of supporting those scientific and technological goals within Aurora that match UK priorities and interests. This should produce a focussing and multiplying effect with respect to the funding channelled through ESA. It was to consolidate the UKs position in key missions, instruments and technologies, in preparation for a decision as to whether the UK was to join the implementation phase of the programme after the Ministerial Meeting held on 5-6 December 2005. However, subject to receipt of proposals of acceptable quality, up to 20% of the resources will be allocated to consider alternative scenarios, missions and technologies which could meet the UKs goals. Such alternative approaches might be taken forward either inside or outside the Aurora programme.

Proposals had to be very clear about funding from ESA demonstrating that the proposal was for distinct but complementary work. Appropriate industrial contributions either in-kind or cash will be looked on favourably.
