A parallel media event will run in London for those who are unable to be at CERN. Two-way live satellite links will join the two events. The London event will be open to members of the UK particle physics community who wish to be on the scene - registration details will follow later as the timetable is confirmed.
UK scientists willing and able to speak to the media will be much in demand at both events. STFC will be contacting LHC scientists who have had media training for their availability.
To maximise the likelihood of local/regional media coverage we recommend you contact media in your region (after consultation with your local Press Officers and STFC Communications team) with the offer of a local angle on this major international story.
Public events:
Public awareness of the LHC is already high (for a science project) and this is a great opportunity to conduct public engagement activities. While the launch day itself is the best opportunity to capture public interest an event over the preceding or following weekend might work just as well. These might include:
- A small exhibit, staffed by scientists with real 'bits' from the LHC, in a local shopping centre or other popular venue, perhaps with clips from news coverage and headlines from papers
- A series of visits to local schools to talk about the LHC, or a schools talk at a central local venue
- A cafe scientifique in a local wine bar/pub. This could concentrate on 'why build the LHC?' or 'making the world's biggest and most complex machine work!'
- An 'open lab day' to celebrate the launch
- A public lecture
Your local communications teams or the UK LHC Communications Manager will be pleased to offer advice, if needed.
