CERN podcast (link opens in a new window)). He was so enthusiastic about the exciting physics soon to be coming from CERN he talked about it on his website the moment he got back to the UK that evening!
The latest of these visitors was the Minister for Science and Innovation, Ian Pearson, who visited CERN on April 15 (see the report (link opens in a new window) by John Ellis in CERN Bulletin) and the next VIP visitor from the UK will be Alun Evans, the Interim Director General of the Research Councils who is visiting on the 16th of May.
We are working on plans to invite other MPs and key stakeholders (in particular from industry) and if anyone has any thoughts about other key people who would benefit from a visit please let Charlotte or Nigel know and we will endeavour to invite them.
STFC, on behalf of the particle physics community, has won a place at the prestigious Royal Society Summer Exhibition, for an exhibit to promote the LHC.
We need volunteers as 'explainers' to staff this exhibit entitled 'Back to the Big Bang? At the Large Hadron Collider, CERN', during the first week of July at the Royal Society, London.
A key element of the exhibition is the opportunity for the audience to engage with scientists and vice versa. The audience ranges from Fellows of the Royal Society through members of the public to school students.
Researchers, from many disciplines, report that addressing the different levels of understanding, interest and areas of concern makes staffing the exhibition an enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding experience.
The exhibition runs over four days (Monday 30th June, 1st, 2nd and Thursday 3rd July) and apart from the first day is open from 10:00 to 21:00 or 22:00. Audiences are:
- Predominantly teachers, school students and general public in the daytimes
- Public and teachers on the Monday and Tuesday evenings
- Royal Society Fellows and VIPs on Wednesday and Thursday evenings
More details without obligation are available from Ray Mathias (UK LHC Communications Manager).
The exhibition is usually busy and to spread the work load I am looking for a significant number (7-8/day) of physicists to participate. I plan to split the days into two 'shifts' (day and evening) with sufficient staff on each shift to allow for plenty of rest and recuperation between sessions on the exhibit.
The qualifications for these roles are an ability to communicate clearly to a range of audiences, a friendly style and a passion for science.
I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who is interested to be involved in this great opportunity to promote the LHC project.
STFC will of course cover all reasonable T&S costs for those participating.
