HECToR
HECToR is the UK's high-end computing resource, funded by the UK Research Councils. It is available for use by researchers at UK universities and industry in the UK and Europe. HECToR is:
- A world-class supercomputer located and run in the UK;
- An invaluable resource for researchers who study problems with a global impact;
- Part of the DEISA initiative giving leading scientific users access to a European pool of supercomputers
Further information can be found on the HECToR website (link opens in a new window)
How to apply for access to HECToR
Applications for access to the HECToR national service should be submitted on the standard Je-SRP1 (STFC) as part of a consolidated grant for consideration by thappropriate STFC grant panel - the Astronomy Grants Panel (AGP), the Particle Physics Grants Panel (PPGP) or the Nuclear Physics Grants Panel (NPGP).
Prior to submission to STFC, all Principal Investigators (PIs) should obtain a technical assessment of their proposal from HECToR. This is to ensure that the level of resources requested is appropriate for the proposed research and also that any additional technical considerations have been captured prior to submission (for example, software licences).
The PI should submit a draft case for support together with the HECToR Application Form to the HECToR service so that a technical assessment can be undertaken. These forms should be sent to the service electronically. The completed technical assessment will normally be returned to the PI within two weeks of submission to the help desk.
After the technical assessment has been completed, the HPC application form (Sections 1 and 2), should be submitted through the Je-S portal to accompany the research proposal. Full details of the cost of access to HECToR can be found on the HECToR website (link opens in a new window). To help you complete the values required in the HECToR application forms, please see the AU calculator (link opens in a new window) on the HECToR website.
Requests for support and responses to specific user issues are co-ordinated via the HECToR Helpdesk. The Helpdesk provides cover Monday to Friday 0830-1800 (excluding UK Bank Holidays).

How to apply for access to HPC facilities other than HECToR
Applications for access to HPC facilities other than HECToR or for computer hardware, system and software support, and operating costs should be submitted on the standard Je-SRP1 (STFC) as part of a consolidated grant for consideration by the appropriate STFC grant panel - the Astronomy Grants Panel (AGP), the Particle Physics Grants Panel (PPGP) or the Nuclear Physics Grants Panel (NPGP).
