Candidate for STFC Chair post announced

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has announced that Professor Michael Sterling, until recently Vice Chancellor of Biirmingham University, has been selected as the preferred candidate to become Chairman of STFC. The full annoucement can be seen on the BIS website (link opens in a new window).

In line with proposals to increase democratic scrutiny of key public appointments Lord Mandelson has invited the IUSS Select Committee to hold a pre-appointment hearing and to report on Professors Sterling's suitability for the post. The date of this hearing has yet to be advised.

Our present Chairman Peter Warry has agreed to stay on in post until the new Chairman is officially appointed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his commitment and guidance to Council over the years of his tenure. Peter has been Chairman of STFC since its creation in April 2007, and was Chairman of one of its predecessor Councils – the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council [PPARC] – having been appointed to this role in 2001, making Peter Warry PPARC’s longest serving Chairman.
