STFC announces review of ground-based astronomy

Building on the outcome of the 2007/08 Programmatic Review and the European ASTRONET (PDF - link opens in a new window) roadmap, STFC is now launching a longer term review of the key science goals for ground-based astronomy, and the facilities needed to deliver that science vision.

The Panel’s remit is to identify the key science goals that may be addressed by ground-based astronomy at wavelengths ranging from the optical to radio in the next 10 years. It will then use those goals to provide recommendations on the UK’s requirements and future strategy for involvement in the whole suite of ground-based facilities, including those currently in the STFC programme, and other emerging opportunities.

The Panel will shortly start its consultation with the UK community. In the coming weeks, it will release a consultation document and questionnaire inviting input on the science goals and priorities. Discussion meetings with the community are planned before the close of consultation in July, ahead of reporting, through the new STFC Advisory Panels, to PPAN (Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics) and Science Board in October 2009.

The Panel will be chaired by Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson of Imperial College London, with a membership of expert users covering all areas of facilities and wavelengths in the Panel’s remit. A dedicated website for the review and consultation will shortly be available, and the astronomical community will be able to contribute to the process through this site. As it works, the Panel will maintain close cooperation with the Near- and Far-Universe Advisory Panels as they begin their own processes of developing science roadmaps for their respective areas.
