Call for nominations for advisory panels to STFC's Science Committee for Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics

Closing date 30 September 2008

STFC’s Science Committee for Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics (PPAN) is establishing standing Advisory Panels to develop and maintain research roadmaps in their areas and to act as two way conduits of communication between STFC, PPAN and the research communities.

Five advisory panels are being established:

  • Particle Physics (PPAP)
  • Nuclear Physics (NPAP)
  • Particle Astrophysics (PAAP)
  • Near Universe (NUAP) covering those parts of the astronomy and space science programmes concerned with the sun, solar system and the properties of objects within our galaxy
  • Far Universe (FUAP) covering those parts of the astronomy and space science programmes concerned with the global properties of our galaxy, with objects beyond our galaxy, and with cosmology

Draft terms of reference are available but are subject to final approval by PPAN.

Appointments will be made initially for a period of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. STFC advisory bodies are expected to have members with expertise across the breadth of their scientific remits, from a range of different institutions. Nominees should have a strong scientific reputation.

Nominations are sought from members of the relevant research communities in both academia and industry. Nominations of and by STFC scientists will be accepted.

Final selection of members will be made by STFC. STFC will seek the best members possible for its advisory bodies but also seeks to ensure that membership reflects the diversity within the relevant research communities and so would particularly welcome nominees from groups traditionally underrepresented on such bodies. STFC welcomes nominations of appropriate experts based outside the UK.

If you wish to nominate yourself or a colleague:

Nominations should be a maximum of 1 page in length and should set out the nominee’s area(s) of science expertise and current activity, career track record and committee/policy experience. Please ensure that the nominee is aware of and agrees to nomination.

Please send your nomination(s) to the Science Strategy Office (c/o Ms. Hayley Nurse) at Polaris House, or by e-mail by 30 September 2008 at the latest.
