9th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation
Manchester, UK
13-17 August 2007
MEDIA INVITATION TO ATTEND
BSR2007, the 9th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation will this year be held at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, UK. The conference will bring together the world's leading authorities in the biological applications of synchrotron radiation for a 4 day programme which includes lectures by leading academics: Nobel Laureates Professor Johann Deisenhofer and Hartmut Michel; Professor Janos Hajdu based in Sweden at Uppsala Universitet; and from Japan, Professor Shigeyuki Yokoyama, RIKEN Genomic Sciences Centre.
Synchrotron radiation has played a significant role in biological discovery over the last fifty years, for example in the development of Relenza™ - the world's first neuraminidase inhibitor for the treatment of flu. Today synchrotron radiation is used in a wide range of biological studies from HIV and SARS to alternative energy sources. Highlights of BSR2007 can be reviewed in the

The UK is world-leader in synchrotron radiation with STFC Darebury's Synchrotron Radiation Source (link opens in a new window) (SRS) (now closed) which has played a key role in solving over 1,000 protein structures, including that of the Nobel prize-winning F1 ATPase and the structure of Foot and Mouth disease virus. The Daresbury synchrotron will be superseded by the Diamond Light Source based at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus at the end of 2008. Diamond, which became operational in January this year, will continue the cutting edge research of SRS and lead discoveries in this field for the coming decades.
Attendance at the conference is free for registered media, and we look forward to seeing you there. For more information, see the BSR2007 (link opens in a new window)| website.
