Review of STFC structural issues
I welcome the Science Minister's recognition of the structural and financial pressures facing STFC since its creation. During January and February I intend holding discussions with representatives of the scientific and academic community to identify possible options to better deliver on STFC's initial promise.
The review will not address the outcomes of the science prioritisation recently completed under the leadership of our Science Board. Decisions announced by Council are now being implemented in time for the 2010-11 financial year.
It is important to recognise that despite the pressures upon it, STFC has achieved a great deal since April 2007. It is one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations, and adds scientific, societal and economic value for the UK by serving the entire research base - from medical and biological research to astronomy, particle and nuclear physics, engineering and cultural research. When arrangements for consultations are confirmed, I will update the community on my proposed discussions.
