Distributed Computing Workshop - 21 May 2008

1 Great George Street, London
Wednesday 21 May 2008
09:00 - 17:00

This event was organised by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in partnership with the Enabling Grid for E-SciencE (EGEE) project with major support from the Particle Physics Grid (GridPP) and the Grid Computing Now! Knowledge Transfer Network.

The workshop focused on drawing attention to new developments and opportunities in distributed computing technologies emerging from the world of science that could benefit a range of industrial sectors, such as Financial Services, Energy, Engineering, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals and Transport. A main objective of the workshop was to identify the barriers to deployment of open source Grid middleware in industry and potential opportunities for commercialising available distributed computing technologies and transferring them to industry.

(84) attendees from a mixture of UK and European industry, academia and government organisations attended the Distributed Computing Workshop. There were a number of stimulating presentations on the subjects of distributed computing technologies developed by STFC-funded scientists and industrial applications for Grid. The plenary session provided an excellent overview of the scientific and industrial Grid landscape while two industry specific parallel sessions focused on Grid opportunities in Finance, Energy, Life Sciences and Healthcare sectors.

The workshop provided industrialists, academics and users with an excellent opportunity to learn about distributed computing technologies offered by STFC and explore possibilities for collaboration. STFC will provide ongoing support to prospective partnerships in this field through its KITE Club IT Special Interest Group.

Presentations from each of the sessions are available below.
