The Futures Programme

The Futures Programme is working to broaden the impact of STFC’s science and technology into areas that are strategically important to the UK. The main focus of our work is on global challenges in energy, the environment, healthcare and security where they address the policies and programmes of UK government departments with responsibility for these areas. Government departments we currently work with include the Department of Health, the Ministry of Defence, the Home Office, the Department of Energy & Climate Change, the Department for Transport, the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs as well as STFC’s sponsoring department, the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills.

The following activities will be undertaken:

  • Engagement with policy makers

    • raising awareness of STFC capability relevant to their needs

    • identifying policy challenges where STFC capabilities can be applied

    • putting policy makers in touch with expert advisers in the national laboratories and the wider science community (and vice versa)

  • Horizon scanning for relevant science and technology trends
  • Stimulating activities aimed at addressing government needs

STFC/RUSI Conference Series in Defence, Security and Resilience

Few, if any, of the challenges facing Government today are as complex or as challenging to address as those arising in the defence, security and resilience domain (where, for our purposes, resilience is taken to threats and vulnerabilities of society and the critical infrastructure upon which normal functioning of that society is dependent).

Some threats are modern variants of those faced during the Cold War. Others are entirely new and characteristically different. However, virtually all lack a single discipline solutions and the requirement for effective interaction between technical, social, ethical, political, policy and economic dimensions is self-evident.

STFC is collaborating with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the UK’s leading independent defence and security think-tank which enjoys an enviable World wide reputation for its policy related work, to plan and deliver an on-going series of conferences.

Each event will address a topical issue in the defence, security and resilience domain. By drawing upon the collective and complementary expertise of the two organisations STFC and RUSI will together facilitate new and illuminating insights into the relationship between academic research and government policy/operations.

Recognising the need for multidisciplinary, STFC is agnostic with respect to the academic disciplines present at these events. Attendance is categorically NOT limited to those communities traditionally associated with or supported by STFC. Indeed, we actively encourage all members of the wider academic community who believe their particular discipline or expertise is relevant to consider registering.

Any comments, suggestions or enquiries on this conference series (or the STFC Defence, Security and Resilience Futures Programme more generally) should be directed to Professor Bryan Edwards who would be delighted to hear from you.
