Joint grant scheme

Science & Technology Facilities Council / MoD Technology Funding

A concordat exists between the MoD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (link opens in a new window) (Dstl) and the Science & Technology Facilities Council to identify areas of mutual interest and to foster collaboration on research into technology developments within those areas.

All applicants to the Council for funding involving technology development are encouraged to establish contacts within Dstl and investigate whether a research collaboration can be arranged. Applicants should discuss their ideas with a technical sponsor from MoD, Dstl, AWE or the Met Office. Close liaison with a sponsor is essential and where a sponsor cannot be readily identified guidance will be provided by the Joint Grant Scheme (JGS) Project Manager.

If the proposal is assessed to be of sufficient value and priority to MoD a formal letter will be issued (usually directly to the Council) stating MoD's intention to support the proposal if it is successful at the Council peer review. The letter will specify the amount of JGS funding being offered (normally 50% of the total cost for proposals up to £500,000) and indicate any elements of the proposal which are of particular importance or concern to MoD. This process should take less than 4 weeks.

Applicants should then submit the proposal to the Council for peer review by the appropriate Grant Panel. The JGS award is conditional on the proposal passing the Council peer-review system. Details of current and upcoming JGS calls will be published on the STFC website.

Full details of the MoD Joint Grants Scheme can be found on the Dstl website (link opens in a new window).
