CERN Fellowships

CERN awards approximately 90 fellowships per year, about half for research in experimental particle physics or theoretical particle physics and about half for work in applied science and engineering.

Fellowships are awarded for one year with a normal one year extension and are intended for post graduates.

Full details of the programme, including deadlines for applications, can be found on the CERN fellowships (link opens in a new window) website. UK nationals wishing to apply for a CERN Fellowship should read the notes for guidance before submitting their application direct to CERN.

CERN Technical student programme

CERN has a number of placements for students specializing in different technical fields and following a full-time course at an educational establishment in the Member States. Placements are from 6 months to a year. Students specialising in theoretical or experimental particle physics are not eligible for this scheme.

CERN doctoral student programme

CERN has a few placements for students studying for a doctorate in a technical field in a Member State. Placements are for one year, normally renewable for a further year. Students specialising in particle physics are not eligible for this scheme.

CERN Summer students programme

CERN has placements for students who have completed 3 years of undergraduate training in physics, engineering or computing to join a team at CERN. These placements last 2 to 3 months over the summer and include academic training lectures.

Further information about the CERN student programmes, including how to apply and the various deadlines, can be found on the CERN website (link opens in a new window).
