Challenge Led Applied Systems Programme (CLASP) schemes

Current evidence indicates that key stakeholders are unaware of the large amount of Intellectual Property arising from STFC funded research that is already responsible for technical advances often taken for granted in everyday life. Furthermore, these advances have frequently been exploited overseas rather than within UK Plc.

The Challenge Led Applied Systems Programme (CLASP) applies STFC research to global research challenges in the four key areas identified in the Futures Programme i.e. energy, environment, healthcare and security. Individual calls are aligned to specific challenge areas.

There is a two stage application process for CLASP. Applicants are invited to submit a short expression of interest, this is assessed by the CLASP panel. A number of applicants will then be invited to develop a full proposal with the assistance of specific panel members assigned as mentors.

The CLASP scheme was first piloted in 2008 as the Particle and Nuclear Physics Applied Systems (PNPAS) scheme. Summaries of the projects awarded funding can be found through the link to PNPAS projects. The CLASP Medical call was announced in the spring of 2010. The CLASP security call is open for submission of outline proposals with a deadline of 16:00 23rd August 2011.
