The Science Board provides advice to Council and the executive on all aspects of STFC's science and technology programme.

In particular it:

  • Works with the science programme office to formulate and update a long-term science strategy for STFC, based on inputs from the science programme office, the Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics Science Committee (PPAN) and the Physical and Life Sciences Committee (PALS).

  • Identifies and prioritises the scientific opportunities likely to arise within the next fifteen years or so, with a description of the technologies required for their success and an estimate of the cost, again based on inputs from the science programme office, PPAN and PALS.

  • Prioritises all known short to medium-term investment projects in the STFC science and technology programme in the context of the funds available against agreed and publicised criteria.

  • Carries out a biennial programmatic review of all STFC operational facilities, experiments and other scientific investments, comparing their recent and predicted scientific productivity against agreed and publicised criteria.

  • Agrees and recommends a detailed STFC scientific investment plan against a budget set by the Council, taking into account the agreed programme priorities, the long term science strategy and the programmatic review. This will include recommending the funding for major investment projects and R&D programmes taking account of the recommendations of PPAN and PALS.

  • Reports through its chairman to the Council.

  • Delegates elements of the above to PPAN and PALS committees and maintains oversight of the work of these committees.
