Our history - 2000 to date
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is created following a review of the Government's investments in scientific research and innovation.
2002
Research Councils UK was formed to help the research councils work more effectively together.
2003
The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) was given a new strategic role.
It became the national focus for large scale scientific research facilities for neutron scattering, synchrotron radiation and high power lasers.
2006
The Government published "Science and Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014: Next Steps" – its thoughts on the long-term challenges facing science and innovation in the UK.
It was proposed that CCLRC and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) should merge.
2007
The Science and Technology Facilities Council was formed, replacing CCLRC and PPARC.
