Our history
Formed in 2007, following the merger of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) and the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) inherits a reputation for excellence in scientific research that dates back to 1920.
1920 to 1970
The Government opens a series of laboratories to undertake leading-edge scientific research.
1970 to 1999
As some research moves to international laboratories, Britain’s resources are redeployed to areas of science and engineering.
2000 to date
STFC is created following a review of the Government’s investments in scientific research and innovation.
