Who we fund

The STFC provides a wide selection of funding opportunities for all major scientific projects within the UK. This funding is distributed across a variety of projects, from "home-grown" projects to international research collaborations that involve hundreds of researchers around the world.

Through grants and other schemes, STFC funds major universities and laboratories.

Postdoctoral and advanced fellowships are grants intended for researchers who do not have a permanent position but still wish to pursue a long-term research career. The fellowships enable researchers to perform independent research for up to 3 or 5 years, for postdoctoral and advanced fellowships respectively.

Postgraduate studentships are awarded by the STFC via training grants to research institutions. These studentships allow individuals to train beyond a first degree and are held for between three and four years, depending upon the PhD project.

The Science in Society programme Small Awards Scheme enables access to funding for small, local or pilot projects that focus on the science and technology of the STFC.
