The committee provides advice to the Science Board and the executive on all aspects of STFC's particle physics, astronomy, space and planetary science and nuclear physics programmes.
In particular it:
- Formulates and updates a long-term science strategy for particle physics, astronomy, space and planetary science and nuclear physics, as input to the Science Board's strategy, based on inputs from the community and from the science programme office.
- Provides appropriate inputs to the Science Board's agreed programme priorities.
- Provides appropriate inputs to the biennial programmatic reviews.
- Prioritises all known short to medium-term investment projects in the particle physics, astronomy, space and planetary science and nuclear physics programmes.
- Agrees and recommends a detailed particle physics, astronomy, space and planetary science and nuclear physics scientific investment plan against a budget guideline set by the Science Board, taking into account the agreed programme priorities, the long term science strategy and the programmatic review. This includes recommending the funding for major investment projects and R&D programmes taking account of the recommendations of the panels reporting to it.
- Monitors and reviews the operations of and provide strategic advice and guidance to the peer-review panels.
- Reports through its chairman to the executive and the Science Board
