Professor Tim Wess
Professor Tim Wess is Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Estates and Head of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University. He joined Cardiff University in 2003 as Professor of Biomaterials at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. Prior to this, he was a Reader and Lecturer at the University of Stirling.
Previous to joining Science Board, Tim was Chair of PALS (Physical and Life Sciences Committee) (2007-2009). He is Chair of the New Light Source Project Board, and Chair of the Environmental & Cultural Heritage beamtime award committee for the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
The main theme of his research is investigation of order and disorder in the structure of biological materials. The disorder observed can be inherent within a material, or can be an effect of ageing, post mortem deterioration or the environment. He studies the interactions in biological materials from the living through historical to archaeological contexts
