STFC Economic Impact Reporting Framework 2009/10

This is the third annual Economic Impact Reporting Framework (EIRF) published by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

These reports were implemented across all the Research Councils in 2005 and form part of the new Economic Impact Framework managed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The Council's EIRF should be read in conjunction with its 2009/10 Annual Report, which provides a comprehensive summary of achievements over the period.

The framework shows, where possible, the data for 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10.

The data for 2009/10 show:

  • Income from consultancy and contract research remained steady

  • An increase in spend on Knowledge Transfer activities, in particular for the Particle and Nuclear Physics Applied Systems call

  • An rise in the number of publications generated by grant funding and sponsorship of astronomy and planetary sciences, particle physics and nuclear physics

  • The citation indices of these publications continued to increase

  • An increase in the number of publications by users of the three large research facilities at Harwell (Central Laser Facility, Diamond Light Source and ISIS)

  • A steady increase in the number of experiments carried out at the Harwell facilities

  • A modest increase in new capital spend, in particular for the continuing development of ISIS Target Station 2

  • Funding for Public Engagement remained consistent with previous years, supporting a vibrant and wide-ranging programme. Over 40% of STFC’s public engagement activity was of national scope, and several STFC-supported researchers reached national or international audiences

  • Patent applications and patents granted continue at a steady rate

  • The number of companies locating at the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus continued to rise, bringing the total to 90
